The best cheeses for the ultimate cheeseburger

Light the charcoal, marinate the meat and spin the salad - barbecue season has arrived.

Flames, smoke and heat can do wonders to food, and the same goes for our clothbound cheddar. In this blog, we’ll be delving into which of our cheeses are best for burger season.

The Ultimate Cheeseburger

For us, the ultimate cheeseburger is flavourful, gooey, molton cheese trickling down a smoky, real, homemade burger in a toasted brioche bun. We like to add something sweet or acidic too - maybe some red onion marmalade or chutney to give it that extra tang.

What makes a good cheese for burgers?

When deciding on the best cheese for burgers, you’re looking for a combination of flavour and moisture. A cheese that naturally melts when you apply heat to it is best. For example, you don't want to try something like a dry Manchego or a Parmigiano, which will just sweat because of their high melting points and low moisture levels.

With diverse flavours across the range and magnificent meltability, Quicke’s clothbound cheddar is the champion cheese to upgrade your burgers this barbecue season. Our younger, creamier cheeses are best for melting in your burgers as they have more retained moisture and lower melting points. We recommend grating your cheese before adding it to the burger for the best results.

Best Quicke’s cheeses for burgers

Below, we’ve hand-selected the best cheeses from our range for grating and melting into your burgers for the ultimate oozing cheeseburger. All our cheeses are handcrafted using milk from our grass-fed cows, clothbound in muslin and naturally matured in our cheese stores for up to two years.

Quicke’s Buttery Clothbound Cheddar

The youngest cheddar in our range, this is an intensely buttery cheddar with a subtle, clean aroma, full of the smooth richness of our Devonshire milk. Melts marvelously when heat is applied.

Quicke’s Mature Clothbound Cheddar

A rich and buttery cheddar that offers outstanding depth of flavour, which develops as it reaches the back of the palate. Brothy to grassy to caramel notes reign in this classic mature cheddar, bringing brilliant flavour to a cheeseburger.

Quicke’s Oak Smoked Clothbound Cheddar

If the smokiness from the barbie isn’t enough for you, this cheese is our Mature Cheddar smoked using oak chips from trees grown on the Quicke's estate. A sensuously smoky flavour with a beautifully buttery mouthfeel, especially when melted. Great for that delicious smoky hit.

Quicke’s Devonshire Red Clothbound Cheese

This vibrant, full-flavoured cheese is our distinctive take on a classic Red Leicester. Its crumbly texture gives it magnificent meltability with an oozy mouthfeel. With fresh, nutty flavours and a lemony creaminess, Devonshire Red is guaranteed to raise your burger game.

Quicke’s Goat’s Milk Clothbound Cheese

A hard and subtle goat’s milk cheese which is vibrant, almondy and buttery. A delightfully different way to boost your burger. Its light texture means it melts really well, especially when grated.
