MEET THE TEAM

Our people are at the heart of what we do. Crafting greatness relies on many hands and minds working together as one. We recently spoke to our Autumn Herd Manager Matt Heal, who shared with us what it is like working at Quicke's and of course his favourite cheese!

How long have you been working at Quicke's?

I took on the position of Autumn Herd Manager in October 2017.

What time does your day start?

My day usually starts around 4.30am in time for morning milking.

What is the best part of your day?
One of the most enjoyable times of my day is bringing the cows in for morning milking, as the suns coming up, and planning what the team and I are going to be doing that day. It can often change numerous times during milking!

Is there a particular month you prefer working on the farm?
March/April are some of the best months to be working outside on the farm. The cows are out grazing the rich green grass, the days are getting longer and the grass is really beginning to grow ahead of the cows.

What is your favourite memory so far?
Turning the cows out in my first spring - February 2018 -  the earliest I had ever turned cattle out.

What is the best part of your job/ working at Quicke's?

The team I work with, and the open and honest way that Quicke's as a business is run. It makes coming to work every morning fun and rewarding.

If we could give you a lifetime supply of any of our cheeses, which one would it be and why?

Mature and Extra Mature. They are also favourites of both my Dad and brother, so birthday and Christmas presents for them are taken care of!

Our cheese is made with 3 primary ingredients (milk, sea salt & time). What are the main ingredients in your life and work?

My family, my friends and the cows.

What would you do for a living if you were not a Herd Manager?

What would I be doing if I wasn’t a Herd Manager? I genuinely don’t know the answer to that. From the age of 9, all I wanted to be was a farmer so I've never even entertained the idea of doing anything else!
