The Garden

Much More Than Just Cheese

Further treasures beyond cheese are to be found at Sherwood House. Sir John Quicke has for 35 years been developing one of the country's National Collections of Azaleas.

The garden is open every Sunday afternoon 2-5 throughout the year.

We are grateful to Vaughan Gallavan who took most of the photographs in this section.  Vaughan is the only full time gardener working here. He takes cuttings of the plants and can supply them to you. His telephone number is 01392 851589.

A Labour of Love

The front of the house has formal gardens which lead into the natural structures of the two valleys.

The gardens occupy a 15 acre site. Sir John and his wife Prue moved to Sherwood in 1968. The original garden at that stage was suffering from much neglect.

Currently there are 358 varieties of Azaleas, 214 varieties of Magnolias and 197 varieties of Berberis.

We now have a National Collection of Magnolias, Knaphill Azaleas and Berberis.

Into The Valley

The end of the formal garden rapidly plunges into one of the valleys, creating a wonderful view.

The Caves Valley

The walk through the valley allows the visitor to view the collection in a stunning setting.

Much of the local microclimate is a result of the conifers planted by the previous owners, the Caves.

The Stars Of The Show

But of course the real stars of the garden are the flowers.

Azaleas are at their best approximately
18 May - 8 June.

The Final Word

New plantings of Azaleas now extend to the east of the house.
